IDEAL Cell: Work Package 2 "Oxygen Electrode Assembly Development"
Objectives
Fabrication of an optimized SOFC compartment by:
- Selection of the optimal materials combination for shaping of single cells in WP4;
- Selection of the optimal materials combination for stacking and advanced testing in WP5.
Description of work
Task 2.1. Powders synthesis and conditioning (Partner 1, Partner 2, Partner 6).
The goal of this task is:
- Fabrication of standard material powders for the proof of the concept (Gd-Ceria (GDC), Y-Ceria (YDC), LS(F)C);
- Fabrication of advanced materials powders for the optimization of the dual cell (doped GDC, YDC, LS(F)C, with appropriate size, morphology, doping, conditioning etc.).
This task comprises all the relevant necessary powder characterization techniques, including TEM, differential thermal analysis and others. Co-precipitation and solid state synthesis route will be alternatively followed.
Task 2.2: Evaluation of the appropriate forming processes and sintering (Partner 1, Partner 4, Partner 8)
In this task, we focus on determining the experimental procedures for:
- Tape casting of components GDC and/or YDC and LS(F)C (slurries composition, volume fraction of pore former for electrode, drying conditions, type of solvent);
- Serigraphy (preparation of inks on the basis of GDC and/or YDC and LS(F)C, composition, drying, rheological tests);
- Plasma-spraying (power, pressure, working distance, powder feed rate).
Task 2.3: Fabrication of LS(F)C/GDC/LS(F)C symmetrical cells (Partner 1, Partner 4, Partner 8)
The task is dedicated to the fabrication of samples for evaluation of the cathode material quality (Task 2.5) when different processes are used, in view of the dual cell fabrication. The fabrication of symmetrical cells cathode/electrolyte with dense electrolyte for tape casting and screen printing and full cells for simplicity when plasma spray is used via different processes is undertaken.
Task 2.4: Fabrication of LS(F)C/GDC/porous GDC/LS(F) pseudo-symmetrical cell (Partner 1, Partner 4, Partner 8)
The fabrication of symmetrical cells cathode/electrolyte/porous electrolyte/cathode by tape casting and screen printing and full cells by plasma spray is undertaken for evaluation of the porous oxygen electrolyte properties (Task 2.5) in view of the central membrane fabrication.
Task 2.5: Testing of LS(F)C/GDC/LS(F)C and of LS(F)C/GDC/porous GDC/LS(F)C multilayers (Partner 4, Partner 5)
EIS measurements will be performed on standard half-cells (including half cells with dual structure of the oxygen carriers electrolyte, corresponding to the SOFC compartment) for general characterization, as well as on half-cells with modified configuration and variety of the testing conditions – geometry, thickness, temperature range, gas flows, pressure etc. Selected EIS measurements will be analysed by Differential Impedance Analysis (DIA) with the aim to obtain information about the main steps and the rate-limiting one. The results will be used for optimization of the assembly.
Task 2.6: Optimization of the assembly (cathode) (Partner 2)
This task focuses on the optimization of the cathode/electrolyte assembly, in view of WP4 and WP5, through a thorough examination of the different assemblies’ microstructure and its influence on the assemblies’ properties. All relevant analytical techniques, SEM, SIMS, XPS, TEM will be used, if appropriate. Compatibility and reactivity between adjacent materials and best performances are elements of choice. Data will be used to adjust the processes and sintering parameters.
