Innovative Dual mEmbrAne fuel Cell: IDEAL Cell
About IDEAL Cell
The IDEAL Cell project aims at developing an innovative and competitive concept for a high temperature fuel cell, operating in the range of 600-700°C, based on the junction between a PCFC anode/electrolyte part and a SOFC electrolyte/cathode, through a mixed hydrogen- and oxygen-conducting porous ceramic membrane.
The design of three independent chambers for hydrogen, oxygen, and water offers a new possibility for "fine-tuning" each chamber for an exclusive purpose. As in an internal combustion engine, the efficiency of the system could be tailored and enhanced by an easy and independent application of pressure on the water-free hydrogen and oxygen electrodes, which is impossible in standard SOFCs and PCFCs.
